Oliver Lewis – Violinist
About Oliver Lewis – Violinist
‘Like Andre Rieu but more fun!’
In October 2010 Oliver Lewis shot to instant global celebrity when he became the Guinness Book of Record’s ‘World’s Fastest Violinist’, after playing The Flight of the Bumblebee faster than any other violinist in history. This he did on the BBC’s iconic TV show Blue Peter in a time of 1 minute 3.356 seconds. He broke his record again in 2011 on the Ellen DeGeneres TV show in the US, smashing the elusive one minute ‘barrier’.
Picking up his first violin at the age of eight, it was not long before he was being labelled a child prodigy, and he was made leader of the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain at the age of 12. Winning scholarships to the Purcell School of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and then to the Berne Conservatoire in Switzerland, he graduated with a ‘soloist diploma’, the highest degree of its type in Switzerland, and made his professional solo debut there, performing Bruch’s G minor Violin Concerto and Ravel’s Tzigane as soloist with the Bern Symphony Orchestra. Following this success, he was immediately invited to become leader and soloist of the Heidelberg Chamber Orchestra in Germany, and with them, he performed Vivaldi’s Four Seasons over 400 times all around Europe.
At this point, Oliver was a much acclaimed virtuoso of the classics, but it was unknown that he was also a master in stylistic diversity. Invited to appear in the smash hit Irish dance show Spirit of the Dance, his virtuoso ‘fiddling’ went down such a storm with audiences and critics alike, that he virtually became a star overnight, thrilling and captivating audiences the world round with his spectacular display of dazzling violin showmanship.
Together with producer Dave Williams (composer of the music to Spirit of the Dance), Oliver created Deviations Project, which blends elements of classical music with electronic synthesised sounds in all time classical favourites such as Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Bizet’s Carmen. Producing three albums in total, the huge popularity and success of this musical collaboration peaked in early 2009, when their Christmas album, Adeste Fiddles reached #16 in the US Billboard Classical Crossover Chart.
Oliver has appeared in films and commercials, as the violinist star in a series of TV adverts for Opel cars, as the concert violinist in two M&S Christmas advertisements, and most recently in the Cadburys Olympics TV commercial, in which he got to show off his incredible record breaking violin speed.
He has played exclusively for Presidents and Hollywood starlets, and his concerts and performances have taken him across the globe from Europe to the United States, North America, South America, Australasia, South Africa, and Asia..
